My Income Project

The current project

Why I’m building an affiliate business around digital products

I wanted fewer moving parts while I learned how to reach and serve an audience. This is the route I chose, the work it leaves on my desk, and the trade-offs I accepted with it.

Why this route won for me

I created Five Ways to Build an Income Online to make one decision, not to collect five more possibilities. My main constraint was simple: I did not want to build a product and an audience at the same time.

Creating a product would mean researching, building, delivering, and supporting it before I knew whether I could reliably reach the right people. Promoting an existing product lets me put the audience problem first.

That does not make affiliate marketing easy. It makes the job narrower: understand a specific audience, earn its attention, and help people judge whether an offer fits. Those are the skills I want to develop first.

The job I’m actually choosing

An affiliate introduces people to a product another business owns and may earn a commission when someone buys. The merchant typically handles the product, checkout, and delivery. Support responsibilities depend on the program.

My work happens before the click: earn trust, explain the problem, introduce a relevant option, and make the commercial relationship clear. That is more substantial than dropping links into content and hoping the internet takes it from there.

In exchange for fewer operational responsibilities, I accept less control. The merchant controls the product, price, customer experience, and commission terms. I can choose the recommendation; I cannot control what happens behind it.

What this still requires

A dependable way to reach people
The merchant usually handles the product, checkout, and fulfillment. Your main responsibility is earning attention and helping the right people evaluate the offer. That may mean search, advertising, content, partnerships, or another channel you are willing to learn properly.
A relationship you own
The merchant generally owns the purchase and customer relationship. Your affiliate arrangement may change, but an audience that chose to hear from you can remain useful across offers. That is why I want to build an email list alongside anything I promote.
Comfort with less control
An affiliate can choose what to promote, but cannot control the underlying offer. Products change. Commission structures change. Programs can close. The model works better when your identity and audience are not dependent on one merchant.

When I would choose something else

This route fits the constraints I am working with. Any of these would make me take another model more seriously.

  • You need dependable income within the next few weeks. Building an audience often takes time, while service work may provide a shorter route to getting paid.
  • You want control over the product, price, customer experience, or margin. Building or licensing something of your own may suit you better.
  • You have no interest in learning how to reach people. Marketing is not a final step in this model; it is much of the work.
  • You already have a product that works. Promoting someone else’s may be a detour rather than a step forward.

Questions I would ask before joining any program

A polished sales page can make almost any opportunity sound obvious. These questions are more useful than the polish.

  1. What exactly would I be promoting, and is it useful to customers apart from its affiliate opportunity?
  2. What is the commission, on what, and is it one-off or recurring?
  3. What does participation cost, and is a purchase or subscription required to earn commissions?
  4. What happens to my earnings if the program changes its terms or shuts down?
  5. Who is the buyer, and where would I actually reach them?
  6. Who handles customer questions, refunds, and ongoing support?

If clear answers are difficult to find, I would treat that as useful information.

The program I’m using

I am currently using The Home Business Academy, described here as affiliate marketing training and tools, sold as a subscription.

I am not presenting it as the right program for everyone. Read the details, take the questions above with you, and decide whether the product, costs, terms, and work match what you are prepared to take on.

If you choose another route

That is a useful outcome, not a failed conversion. I will keep writing about what this work requires, what I am learning, and what looks less convincing once the sales language is stripped away.

Return to the comparison and let your actual constraint lead. The best model is not the most exciting one. It is the one whose work you are willing and able to keep doing.
